THOMAS FITCH:
The Fitches are one of the Anglo-Saxon families of England which came over from Germany, it is currently supposed at the time the Country was subdued by Hengist and Horsa (about 450 A.D.) and their followers, when the ancient Britons were driven into the mountains of Wales and Cornwall; and the Saxon Heptarchy was formed, as Essex has long been the principal seat of the family, it is possible that, or perhaps more families of this name in the host of Erkewin who, as history informs us, having expelled the Britons from this part of the island, settled down upon it with his followers and became recognized as the King of the East Saxons about 530 A.D. There is a traditionary legend that the family came to England from Saxony, from a place having a German name meaning in England, Fitch-field. In the records of the Heralds office in London, the genealogy of the Fitch family is quite full, more so than common. In the Heralds visitations of Essex, the family pedigree is traced from sons to fathers, step by step to William, second son of John Fitch who was living in Fitch Castle (The Fitch Castle part of the story is a myth however, and no such castle exists as far as i can find where it was supposed to be in the Parish of Widdington in the northeast part of Essex) in the 22nd year of the reign of Edward I, 1394 A.D. From some of the fragments of the ancient church register of Bocking, adjoining Braintree in Essex, we learn that Thomas Fitch married Ann Penn, August 8, 1611.
ANN PENN: Came to America w/her 4 sons.
Children of THOMAS FITCH and ANN PENN are:
5. i. JAMES5 FITCH, REVEREND, b. December 24, 1622, Essex County, England; d. November 19, 1702, Lebanon.
ii. THOMAS FITCH.
THOMAS FITCH: Thomas Fitch settled in Norwalk, where, in the valuation of estates in 1665, he was the highest upon the list. He is also the first person mentioned in the patent of that town, granted in 1685, and from him in a line of three generations, each bearing the same name, Governor Thomas Fitch, who occupied the chair of state in CT Bet. 1754 - 1766, was descended.
iii. SAMUEL FITCH.
SAMUEL FITCH: A school teacher and representative in Hartford, CT.
iv. JOSEPH FITCH.
JOSEPH FITCH: Joseph can be traced as a landholder, or as a temporary inhabitant, at Norwalk, Hartford, and Northampton; but he ultimately settled at Windsor, upon a valuable farm near the boundary line of the present towns of East Hartford and East Windsor. John Fitch, whose name is honorable connected with the invention of steam navigation, was a descendant of Joseph and born January 21, 1743, near the place where his ancestor settled, on the Windsor part of the farm.
v. JOHN FITCH.
JOHN FITCH: Mortally wounded in the Great swamp fight of the Narraganset Indian War, and having no heir, gave his property to support a school in Windsor. ]]
