He served from 1875 to 31st March 1906. He was 21 (which would make his birth 1854-55) when he joined, stated he was born at Halstead, single, a former Groom.
Essex Record Office document J/P-2/2 gives his height. His collar number was 242, which is the same as the page number of that record. (p242)
Occupation of Charles William Harrington aged 21yrs Police Constable. Retired in 1906 at rank of Superintendant of Police.• He was employed from 1871 to 1885. On the 1871 census he was aged 16 & his occupation was "groom".
He was living with his fatherJames at Great Baddow but mother was away from home.
On the 1881 census he was at Coggeshall but had already been at Romford.
By 1885 he was promoted to Inspector, and was at Harlow.
He married Charlotte Emma Hollowbread at Orsett.• He was employed from 1875 to 1906 in Essex, England. A visit to the Essex Record office (J/P 2-2) revealed:-
Charles W. Harrington joined the Essex Police on 12th April 1875 aged 21years. He was stated to be 6'1 and a half " tall He was formerly a Groom, and was born in Halstead, Essex, Married.
His Police record states:- 2nd class Sergeant at Coggeshall, Essex.
Promoted to Inspector 25th February 1885.
He was at Chelmsford until 19th May 1885 left for benefit of service. Then at Harlow until 2nd January 1894 and left to fill a vacancy*
Then to Castle Hedingham until 1st January 1898. He left upon promotion to Superintendent. He was at Witham until 7th December 1903, he left there to fill a vacancy. Later he was at Saffron Walden until he retired and was pensioned on 31st March 1906
His certificate of character stated "Exemplary service" which was sent on 4th April 1906. His pension at that time was £123-6-8d per annum.
*At Harlow he was presented with £5 for promptness at a fire on 23rd March 1889. Charles William followed in his father James' Harringtons footsteps, both following long careers in the Essex Police force.
