General Notes (Husband)

25. John JESSUP - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Christening: 13 Dec 1795 Cratfield, Suffolk, England Migrated to Australia aboard the Orontes in 1838. O•ron•tes Pronunciation: (ô-ron'tEz, O-ron'-), [key] —n. a river in W Asia, flowing N from Lebanon through NW Syria and then SW past Antioch, Turkey, to the Mediterranean. 250 mi. (405 km) long. Arrived May 1838 Orontes London (3Dec1837) to Sydney e-14682 Araluen is down near Braidwood, located on the hinterland of the NSW South Coast, inland from Mogo off the Kings Highway All worked for the Earl of Stradbroke - all the employees came out together -

Apparently John worked for the Earl of Stradbroke at Henham Park (owned by the Earl of Stradbroke). Whilst the immigration was government sponsored rather than by the Earl, as a number of other boat arriving at this time were, John apparently was 'recommended' by the Earl, as were a number of other individuals who travelled on the Orontes. This would imply that the Earl may have not been able to berth them on a ship he was sponsoring, instead, 'recommending' him to the government sponsored scheme. While the Earl lived in Henham Hall, he spent a lot of time overseas, He was an active member of the military, as was his son. The Earl served in the Peninsula wars of 1812 - 1814
