Samuel must have been a pain to the authorities because I have a copy of the Resettlement Order issued against him in 1775.

This document shows that he had left his parish without permission and settled in Haverhill. This was a luxury not allowed to poor people in those days as they could become a drain upon their new parish. Anyway Haverhill issued an order sending him back to Great Bradley and a year later he married the young widow Elizabeth in neighbouring Little Wratting.

Twenty years later he resurfaces as a drain on the parish. I have copies of entries from the Parish Account Books showing that they had to supply him with items of clothing at various times.

The last was a hat for 2s.9d in October 1791. The very next entry in the book is for material for Widow Basham's girls and two weeks after that on Nov 7th Elizabeth married for the third time. Her new spouse being George Gatley.(We have been unable to find a record of Samuel's death) Now- just visible on the next page of the book I can see two names for more handouts from the parish. They follow each other and one is for Susan Bassam and the next for Mary Bassam. When we bear in mind that spelling was an erratic process in those days it is too much of a coincidence for this was a very tiny village.-

Hello Monique,
I have been re-checking the Parish records for Great Bradley, Suffolk and have a bit more expanded information, you may or may not have, re the Marriage of Samuel Wakeling Basham and Elizabeth Paxman.

Something else that may be of interest to you. I found a birth of a William Wakeling Basham who was born in 1777[no date given] but not Christened untill 28/12/1794.
His parents were listed as Samuel & Elizabeth Basham. This couple were perhaps the younger Samuel's parents also? So far I have not got a birth for him but I shall check further.

This researcher has not yet been able to confirm if this is in fact the correct parents of Samuel. He has been linked/placed here in the correct time frame while awaiting the outcome of my further research. Thomas Goodman Basham is the correct father of William.
