The Origins and Variants of the Surname WAKELING

The name spelled WAKELING is mostly of Essex/Suffolk/Cambridgeshire borders usage, with some in Kent and a few elsewhere. In the Midlands counties the spelling WAKELIN is more usual and is probably more correct, the 'G' having been added at some point where the name is spelled in that form.

Variations in the spelling of the name came about because the populace was almost entirely illiterate (unable to read or write). When they were asked to give their name, the scribe would spell it as he heard it. There have been instances of children of the same family being baptised with surname variations and certainly differences between generations.

==========

The commonly known origin, from the medievil name WALQUELIN, a Norman French derivative of the Germanic by name WALHO meaning 'a stranger or foreigner'.

Early references to the name are found in the county of Huntingdonshire (now absobed into Cambridgeshire), where the family was granted land by William the Conqueror.

About 1130, David Earl of Huntingdon, son of Richard the Lionheart and heir to the Scottish throne, offered lands in Scotland to some of his Norman friends, including the Wakelin family.

William Wakelyn was witness to Earl David's great Charter to the monastry of Lundors?. Stephen Wakelyn appears frquently as witness in Charters by Earl David and the Wakelyns of Inverpeffer (Scotland) were the Kings Brewers in 1200.

In England they flourished on vast estates in Derbyshire and Northamptonshire. Oakham castle, mentioned in the Domesday book was possibly rebuilt by the Lord of Oakham, Walkelin de Ferrers in 1190-1200. He was descended from Henry de Ferrers who fought at the Battle of Hastings. Walchelin of Oakham, son of 1st Earl of Derby, died 1139. Married Godi, daughter of Ralph de Toeni, Lord of Belvois.

Bishop Wakelin built the first Norman Cathedral at Winchester and his brother Simeon became Bishop of Ely (Cambridgeshire).

Other mentions include Ricardus Filius Walkelini (Bury, Suffolk 1119), Wauchelinal Marninot (Templars, London 1157), Walclinus de Normentum (Hy DC2 Lincolnshire), Wakelinus de Roking (Curia R Rolls Lon. Warwickickshire 1221), John Wakelin (Curia Rolls Lon. London 1221), Nicolas Walklin (Ass So 1225) and John Wakelam (Feet of Fines, Staffordshire 1544)

In 1140 Adam de Milevilla witnessed a charter of Wakelin du Bec giving land in Normandy to the Gifford Foundation of Longueville Priory.

Another source for the name is given as from the Anglo Saxon WAECLINGA 'Wake' designated a river meadow and the Waeclinga were reputedly guardians of the river Thames estuary.

The Essex villages of Great and Little Wakering have been known as Great and Little Wakeling(1695 Essex priii) and as Wachelingham (Domesday Book 1086) Wakeringas and Waeceringas 'The settlement of the people of Wacor or Waecer'.
