St Peter's Church and Wolsey's Gate
Cardinal Thomas Wolsey was born in Ipswich
(around 1473) and as Henry VIII's Lord Chancellor built the gate as the
entrance to a College in Ipswich. When Wolsey fell out of favour with the
King the buildings were pulled down and the materials shipped to
London. |

Thomas Wolsey died in 1530 on route to
Leicester to be tried for treason. He was Lord Chancellor for 17 years.

The Ancient House
The Ancient House, or Sparrowes House, so named
from a family who occupied it for many years, was built in 1567. The front
is enriched with wreaths, plasters, etc., and the interior contains some
fine carvings. |
