The Rhyming Aunt - Alice Ann's Letters
Since Alice Ann CLARK (later EMSDEN) started the tradition of writing letters in rhyme, there have been many such letters written over the last 80 or so years. I have been writing letters to my Granny and Aunt in rhyme ever since I can remember...
Here is a rhyme written to my Granny Jean from Alice for her 16th birthday in 1933.
My dear little, sweet? little pretty? neice Jean I am writing to you as today you're sixteen and sending you all my very best wishes Barrels of love, and gallons of kisses I wish you my dear, the very best health Which is, after all, much greater than wealth Though I hope of the latter, you'll have a good slice If just to help others, it always is nice Or when out for the day, it comes jolly handy To buy a nice box of chocolates or candy. I hope you are still getting on very well and expect by this time, you're a very great swell Your parents must miss you, as much today As they did on the morning you first went away And now we have winter coming again With the snow and the frost, and the slush and the rain But is has compensations we very well know To sit in the evenings by the fire's ruddy glow And relate to each other, events of the day With congenial company the time slips away Then we go to our beds, after having a cup And we're no sooner there, then it's time to get up. You owe me a letter, so write when you can Much love and best wishes from Aunt Alice Ann |
